The Post conviction Assistance Center is a public interest law firm located in Los Angeles. We are funded by Los Angeles County and appointed by the courts to handle a variety of post conviction cases. Our office was initially created to handle cases emanating from the Rampart police scandal in Los Angeles. Since that time we have expanded, and presently we handle a variety of cases, including post-conviction DNA testing, ineffective assistance of counsel, malfeasance of experts, and Brady violations. We also handle habeas corpus petitions in which claims are made involving battered woman syndrome. The role of our office is continually evolving in response to both judicial and legislative decisions. For example, we were appointed to review hundreds of cases emanating from the Supreme Court’s decision in Stogner v. California, which struck down the retroactive application of California’s extension of the statute of limitations in sex offense cases. In addition, PCAC represents defendants in Sexually Violent Predator proceedings, including civil jury trials.
